Abstract
343,429. Cellulose pulp. CORNSTALK PRODUCTS CO., Inc., 10, East 40th Street, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Darling, E. R. ; P.O. Box 88, Danville, Illinois, U.S.A.) Oct. 15, 1929, No. 31321. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1928. [Class 96.] In the digestion of cellulose material, particularly of plants of annual growth, such as cornstalks, the initial strength of the digesting liquor is maintained constant during the operation. Digestion may be effected by caustic soda or calcium bisulphite, or by caustic soda and sodium sulphite. In the use of caustic soda a strength of one per cent solution is maintained, and, in consequence, the time of digestion is reduced by one quarter and the pressure by one half; for example, in digesting cornstalks the time for digestion is one and a half hours and the pressure two and a half atmospheres, corresponding to a temperature of 137 C. Concentrated or weak solutions, or solid alkali may be introduced, to an amount determined by a curve plotted to show the normal degradation, by means, for example, of an injector or pump. The liquor, separated subsequently by a centrifuge, may, by reason of the refortification be used again up to six times.
