Abstract

Unbleached Kraft pulp or similar pulp containing a relatively large amount of lignin is crumbled, moistened, subjected to the action of chlorine gas to convert the lignin to chlorolignin, treated with dilute alkali or bisulphite solution to dissolve the chloro-lignins, washed and bleached with hypochlorite or other oxidizing agent and again washed. The chlorine treatment is effected in the cold and may be followed by a washing treatment before the alkaline treatment. The chlorine is preferably produced electrolytically. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 362,786 and 410,005.
