Abstract
491,262. Piston rings. WENZEL, A. W. April 21, 1937, No. 11371. [Class 122 (i)] A compression or scraper ring comprises a number of laminations between which are annular recesses 23 spaced from the ring periphery for distribution of lubricant, and annular recesses 24 open at the ring periphery for collecting excess cylinder lubricant. The recesses 24 are shaped as shown to provide scraping edges and the recesses 23 may decrease in depth toward the ring ends. Further annular recesses may be provided in the outer faces of the outer laminations and one or more of the laminations may be bevelled or rounded at 26 on the upper outer periphery. Radial passages may be provided for connecting the recesses to inner periphery of the ring. In compression rings the lower outer edge of the bottom lamination may be bevelled. An annular projection 41, Fig. 4, on one ring may engage a groove in the other, the inner periphery of the ring being arcuate and engaged by a spring expander 38. The projection may be replaced by a separate element inwardly or outwardly tensioned and engaging coaxial recesses in the laminations. An expanding element 52, Fig. 8, may have. a bevelled periphery for pressing the laminations apart. In a further form, the land between two ring grooves is stepped, Fig. 9, and the co-operating laminations similarly shaped.
