Abstract

399,055. Piston-rings. MELLOR, J., 332, Ocean Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S.A. Jan. 3,1933, No. 192. [Class 122 (i).] A piston-ring comprises a series of axially and radially overlapping segments 1 mounted on the periphery of a carrier ring M and expanded by springs S which may be secured at 13, 14 to the ring M and segments 1 respectively. Projections 9, 10 on one end of each segment engage recesses 6, 8 in the ends of the adjacent segment. The curvature of the surface 9 increases from the end 9a to ensure good contact with the surface 8 after wear. Cylinder pressure has access to the surface of the ring through grooves 22 and to the ring groove through perforations 21. The ring M<1> may be split and mounted in a dovetail groove in the inner periphery of the segments, Fig. 13, with springs S<1> secured to the inner face of the ring. Alternatively the segments may be riveted to a split carrier ring, which may be of wave shape. The segments may have single axial and radial overlapping surfaces.
