Abstract

486,784. Fastenings. BINKS, C. L., and AMAL, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1936, No. 33872. [Class 44] In fastenings for aircraft cowlings &c. of the kind in which an axially movable and rotatable member carries a transversely disposed member adapted to be passed through an elongated aperture and then rotated through a right-angle to engage behind the lateral edges of the aperture, the axially movable member is in the form of a screw which can be operated to lock the fastening positively. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to a fastening of the kind described in Specification 481,361, in which a cylindrical housing 2 with closed inner end and a countersunk head 4 bearing rotatably on a seating 6 in a washer 7 has longitudinal slots 8 in which the transverse fastening member 9 can slide, being urged outwards by a spring 10. Member 9 is threaded to receive a screw 11. A washer 15 having an aperture to fit flats on the screw is disposed between spring 10 and member 9, projections on the washer -engaging in recesses 17 to prevent accidental rotation of the screw. The parts are assembled as shown with the cylinder 2 fitting rotatably in a circular aperture in the cowling 1, with the washer 7 outside and member 9 inside. The screw 11 is pressed inwards carrying the member 9 through the aperture in the part 20 and is then turned to move the member 9 over the projections 22. When the screw is released, the spring 10 holds the member resiliently against the inner surface of the part 20. The device is locked by screwing the screw 11 up against the closed end of the housing 2. In a modification the head of the screw is brought up against a shoulder in the housing 2.
