Patented Oct. 27, 1936 UNHTED STATES MEANS FOR ATTACI-IING A DOOR HANDLE. OR KNOB Johann Wichmann, Koln-Klettenberg, Germany Application January 3, 1934, Serial No. 705,091 In Germany January 11, 1933 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to means for attaching a door handle or knob, more particularly means for fixing the spindle of the door handle or knob in the hub of the rotatable member operating the door latch. In the usual door lock constructions the rotatable member operating the door latch has a hub which is usually provided with a prismatic mostly square bore for the reception of the prismatic mostly square spindle of the door handle or knob. The bore in the hub of the latch operating member is usually made by means of a punch. The connection between the square spindle of the handle or knob and the hub of the latch operating member usually becomes loose within a short time and owing to the play between the spindle and the hub, the edges of the spindle are liable to wear out very quickly which causes great inconvenience and necessitates replacement of the spindle and knob. In order to obviate this drawback it has been proposed to secure the square spindle of the door handle by means of a setscrew or by means of a wedge operated by a setscrew. These devices have, however, the drawback that they cause an uneven clamping and are liable to get out of order, being of a rather fragile construction.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved means for fixing a prismatic handle or knob spindle within the hub of the door latch operating member which will be free from the above mentioned drawbacks. According to the invention, the prismatic usually square spindle of the door handle or knob is not mounted directly in the hub of the latch operating member, but in an intermediate bushing which is conically shaped upon its outside, and is divided longitudinally into a number of parts or sectors corresponding to the number of the sides of the prismatic spindle. The invention consists specifically in providing in a door lock the sub-combination of: a door handle having a prismatic spindle; an externally conical bushing enclosing said prismatic spindle; said bushing being longitudinally slotted; an internally conical ring provided with an external screw thread; a turnable latch bolt operating member having a cylindrical bore for the reception of the bushing and the ring, said cylindrical bore being provided at one end with an internal screw thread, said ring being adapted to be screwed between the conical surface of the bushing and the internal screw thread of said bore; and means upon the bushing and the latch bolt operating member to hold said bushing against rotation in said member, said means comprising an axially extending projection of rectangular cross section on said bushing, and a flange on said latch bolt operating member having a rectangular hole into which said .sition by springs.
projection fits, whereby said bushing engages said latch bolt operating member.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a complete look, a portion of the front wall of the casing being removed,
Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section through the spindle and the adjacent parts,
Figs. 3 to 5 show detailed views of the device including the slotted bushing according to the invention, namely,
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the bushing, intermediate ring and the adjacent hub portion,
Fig. 4 is an end view seen from the right corresponding to Fig. 3 with the bushing and ring removed, and
Fig. 5 is an end view, seen from the left, of the bushing alone.
Referring to Fig. l, the door lock is, as usual,
provided with a lock bolt (1 and a latch bolt b,
the latter being normally held in its operative po- The latch bolt b has a stem 0 which is engaged and operated by an arm d of the rotatable latch bolt operating member e. The member 6 is rotatably mounted in two cover plates f of the lock casing (Fig. 2). The casing is inserted in known manner in the door 9.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 3 to 5, the conical bushing 112 has upon its left face a square projection loosely fitting into a corresponding opening of a flange s of the latch bolt operating member e The bushing is divided into four parts by diagonal cuts as shown in Fig. 5. Clamping of the bushing against the spindle is again effected by means of a ring 0 adapted to screw into the right hand end of the member e I claim:
In a door lock the sub-combination of: a door handle having a prismatic spindle; an externally conical bushing enclosing said prismatic spindle; said bushing being longitudinally slotted; an internally conical ring provided with an external screw thread; a turnable latch bolt operating member having a cylindrical bore for the reception of the bushing and the ring, said cylindrical bore being provided at one end with an internal screw thread, said ring being adapted to be screwed between the conical surface of the bushing and the internal screw thread of said bore; and means upon the bushing and the latch bolt operating member to hold said bushing against rotation in said member, said means comprising an axially extending projection of rectangular cross section on said bushing, and a flange on said latch bolt operating member having a rectangular hole into which said projection fits, whereby said bushing engages said latch bolt operating member.
