Abstract
573,227. Stud fastenings. ODDIE, F. A. Oct. 20, 1943, No. 17231. [Class 44] In a cowling or like fastener of the kind in which a pointed stud has flats engaged by the free ends of converging spring tongues D when the stud is-inserted therebetween, the stud is in two parts A, B arranged so that the effective length of the stud may be adjusted, after the stud has been engaged, to draw the fastened members E, F together tightly. The part A, having the usual head with screw-driver slot for operation, is externally threaded to engage a threaded bore in the part B so that length may be adjusted by relative rotation of the parts, removal of part A from part B being prevented by turning inwards the upper edge of the latter. Accidental relative rotation is prevented by a spring detent C housed in a transverse slot in part A and yieldingly engaging recesses in the inner wall of part B. Part B is provided with flats forming shoulders engaged by the ends of tongues D as shown and is so shaped that when it is rotated through 90‹ the tongue ends ride off the flats and co-operate with the part B to eject the stud. The stud is rotatably anchored in an aperture in the cowling or like member F by a resilient washer F<1> which also serves to make a fluid-tight joint between the parts E, F when these are drawn together. The stud is passed through an aperture in the support or other member E into engagement with the tongues which are carried by a base-plate permanently secured to part E. The tongues D hold part B more firmly than does the weaker detent spring so that after the stud has been engaged as in Fig 1, rotation of head member A causes the detent to ride out of the recesses in part B, allowing part A to be screwed into part B to draw members E, F together. Rotation of head A in opposite direction screws part A out of part B to the full extent allowed by the inturned upper edge of part B, after which part B rotates with part A to effect release and ejection of the stud. Fig. 5 shows modified spring tongues of general S-form.
