Abstract

474,753. Bellows and bellows pumps ; expansion joints. LOCKWOOD, H. C. May 5, 1936, No. 12680. [Classes 8 (i), 99 (i), and 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] Bellows are composed of flat thin metal plates with central apertures, joined together by fusion of the metal along lines A, B, Fig. 1, near the inner and outer peripheries and lying flatly together in contracted position; the plates, or alternate plates, may be extended radially inwards from the inner joint B, for strength. Fig. 9 shows the bellows 45 used as the combustion chamber of an internal-combustion engine, the apertures in the plates being in this case of reduced diameter to give a suitable compression ratio. They may also be employed in similar apparatus as pumps. Fig. 5 shows several such bellows joined to plates 11, 12 screwed to nipples 15 on a sleeve 20 to form an expansion joint between necks 16<1>, 18.
