Abstract
474,192. Discharge apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Jan. 22,1937, No. 1970. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] In a high-pressure mercury tube which comprises a mixture of neon and argon to facilitate ignition, the pressure of the rare gas is lower than 18 mms. and is preferably lower than 10 mms., and the quantity of rare gas is smaller than 6 atom per cent of the mercury vapour available when the tube has reached normal operation. In one form, a tube adapted to emit visible or ultraviolet rays is housed within an evacuated jacket and contains incandescent electrodes, heated by the discharge, and an auxiliary electrode connected through a resistance to an incandescent electrode. The filling comprises 7 mgs. of mercury per cm. length of the tube and neon to which 0À2 per cent argon has been added. The quantity of rare gas amounts to 3 atom per cent of the available mercury vapour. Dimensions of the tube are contained in the Specification. The invention may be applied to tubes in which the mercury pressure is greater or less than 10 atmospheres and to tubes which may or may not be water cooled.
