Abstract
482,625. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and ALDINGTON,.J. N. Dec. 24, 1936, No. 35396. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure mercury-vapour electric discharge lamp is mounted within a sealed outer container, the sealed space between the lamp and the container containing a quantity of gas possessing a thermal conductivity considerably higher than that of air and a quantity of metal adapted to give off vapour or gas as the temperature of the space rises when the lamp is brought into operation, the quantities concerned and the nature of the metal being such that when the lamp is in full operation the sealed space is filled, with the possible exception of a small volume of metal, by a gas or mixture of gases or vapours possessing a high thermal conductivity at a pressure of the order of one atmosphere or more, a substantial part of the pressure being due to the vapour or gas given off by the metal. The lamp filling comprises mercury and may include an amalgam of mercury with cadmium and /or zinc, the running pressure being between ten and one hundred atmospheres. The sealed space between the lamp and the outer container may contain hydrogen and the metal within this space may be palladium, which gives off absorbed hydrogen on heating, or may be mercury. The gas at the time of sealing is at a pressure of approximately 100 mm. of mercury and the pressure under running conditions may be three atmospheres. The discharge tube may be a quartz tube having electrodes in the form of oxide-cored tungsten helices or of liquid mercury surrounding or covering an activated tungsten wire.
