Abstract
431,450. Discharge apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Feb. 26, 1935, No. 6192. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] An artificially cooled high-pressure mercury - vapour tube has a filling of a gas such as neon and a mercury vapour pressure greater than 6 atmospheres and is furnished with solid incandescent electrodes which protrude only slightly from a quantity of mercury or amalgam whichpartlysurrounds the electrodes. Cadmium or zinc may be added to the mercury in the form of an amalgam. The correct quantity of mercury may be added by furnishing a quantity of mercury in an auxiliary tube, for example, the exhaust tube, and sealing off the end of this tube so as to expel small quantities of mercury into the main tube whilst observing. the electrical characteristics. In one form, the leads 2 are sealed into the quartz bulb 1 by coatings 3 and caps 4 of the glass described in Specification 431,923. Thin tungsten wires 5 are wound on the ends of the tungsten wires 2 and the combined wires are then oxide-coated. Mercury 6 is added until the electrodes 5 protrude about 1.3 mms., and until the seals between the caps 4 and the tube 1 are covered. In a modification for ultraviolet light production, the quartz tube is narrowed adjacent the electrodes. The mercury pressure in operation is between 6 and 32 atmospheres, for example, 20 atmospheres. The invention is applicable to tubes of the kind described in Specification 431,923.
