Abstract
495,549. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. April 11, 1938, No. 11113. Convention date, April 13, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Groups XI and XX] The ultra-violet rays from a discharge lamp the majority of which are below 3300 Š, are caused to strike first a luminescent powder layer which absorbs 30 to 70 per cent of the rays to which it is responsive, and then fall upon a luminescent glass layer which responds to the same rays. The powder layer may be made thin while at the same time absorption losses in the luminescent glass are reduced. A lamp with a filling of mercury and neonargon mixture at 10 mms. pressure has an envelope of copper-activated luminescent glass, coated internally with a layer of willemite which absorbs 60 per cent of radiation below 3300 Š. Magnesium vapour may be used. Alternatively, the luminescent powder may be coated on the outside of the lamp, while the luminescent glass forms a further envelope surrounding the lamp. Specification 473,587 is referred to.
