485,274. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS'GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 8, 1937, No. 30615. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] The container of a high-pressure discharge lamp without water or like cooling and whose internal diameter is over 7 mm. is made to the following dimensions, Vb being the operating voltage and B the energy expenditure in watts. (a) The internal diameter in mms. is 2À3 (B<2>/Vb)<.03> , to within 20 per cent. (b) The length of the discharge path in cms. is B<0.8> Vb<0.6> / 325 to within 25 per cent. (c) The thickness of the wall is 5/d¢ mms. when d is the internal diameter of the envelope. An example of such a lamp is described having a filling of argon at 10 mms. pressure at ordinary temperatures and a small quantity of mercury so that the mercury vapour is unsaturated in operation ; the lamp is enclosed in an outer vessel containing nitrogen at a pressure of 50 cms. Specification 476,544 is referred to.
