Abstract

Azo dyes insoluble in water are made on the fibre by coupling diazo, diazoazo or tetrazo compounds derived from amines free from water-solubilizing groups, with 4-arylazo-1-amino-7-naphthol or N-aryl or N-alkyl substitution products thereof. Dark brown to black shades are obtained. In the examples: (1) cotton is padded with 4-(2<1>-methoxy)-benzeneazo - 1 - amino - 7 - naphthol, alcohol, aqueous caustic soda, purified sulphite cellulose waste liquor and the sodium salt of diisobutyl-naphthalene sulphonic acid, and developed with diazotized 2-nitro-4-anisidine (olive grey); (2) cotton is printed with a paste containing the diazoamino compound from tetrazotized dianisidine and sarcosine, 4-(2<1>-nitrophenylazo)-1-amino-7-naphthol, caustic soda, glycolmonoethyl ether and starch tragacanth, dried and treated with steam containing acetic acid (deep black); (3) and (4) similar to (2) using the diazoamino compounds from diazotized 4-chlor-2-anisidine or 4-chlor-2-toluidine and sarcosine and 4-(2<1>-chloro)-benzeneazo-1-amino-7-naphthol (black and dark brown respectively). A table of further combinations is given in which the following additional diazo components are specified: 2-nitro-4-chloraniline, 4<1>-nitro-4-amino - 2 : 5 - dimethoxyazobenzene, m - chloraniline, 2 : 5-dichloraniline, 2-chlor-5-methoxy-4-benzoylamino-1-aniline, 4-nitro-2-toluidine, 5 - nitro - 2 - anisidine, 4 - chloro - 3 - amino - 1 - trifluoromethylbenzene, 1-aminoanthraquinone, 2<1> : 3-dimethyl-4-aminoazobenzene, 5-chlor-2-toluidine, p - nitroaniline, 2 - aminodiphenylsulphone.
