Abstract
Water-insoluble azo dyes are produced on wool or mixtures of wool with cellulose fibres without the aid of a mordant by treating the material with hot water, containing if desired, a non-mordanting electrolyte, particularly a thiocyanate, grounding with an alkaline solution of an o-hydroxyaryl carboxylic acid arylide and developing with a diazo compound. In an example, wool muslin is treated with boiling water, dried, grounded with an aqueous solution containing 1 - (2<1> : 3<1> - hydroxynaphthoylamino) - 2 - methyl - 4 - chlorobenzene, alcohol, caustic soda, sulphite waste liquor and the oleic acid ester of methyltaurine, during which process common salt is added, and developed with a solution of diazotized 4-chloro-2-methyl-1-aminobenzene containing acetic acid and the reaction product of ethylene oxide upon octodecylalcohol. Dyeings are obtained of greater strength of colour than those formed on non-boiled muslin. Potassium thiocyanate and calcium hydroxide are specified as electrolytes which may be added to the pre-treating bath. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the use of electrolytes in general in the pre-treating bath. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
