Abstract

Textile materials consisting of or containing cellulose are printed with a mixture consisting of a coupling component and an alkali or an alkali salt of a coupling component, a suitable diazotizable primary amine, and alkali nitrite, and the printed material after being dried is first passed through acid at ordinary temperature for the purpose of producing diazotization and then through an agent that binds acid for the purpose of producing coupling. Suitable diazotizable primary amines are those which do not melt below 60 DEG C., do not yield vapours which are poisonous or objectionable and are not so freely volatile that they would be removed to any appreciable extent on drying the fabric. The production of the prints may be combined with the production of other dyes, for example, with that of Aniline Black, or effects produced by vat-dyes or their leucosulphuric acid esters. In examples: (1) 4-(1<1>-methyl) -phenoxyacetylamino-2.5-dimethoxy-1-aminobenzene, 2.3-oxynaphthoic acid-3<1>-nitranilide, sodium nitrite and sodium acetate are made up into a paste with turkey red oil, glycerin, sodium hydroxide and starch tragacanth thickening; the fabric is printed with this, dried, passed through 2 per cent aqueous hydrochloric acid and then through sodium carbonate, bicarbonate or acetate and finally soaped (violet shades); (2) using benzeneazo-o-anisidine and 2.3 - oxynaphthoic acid - 4<1>-methoxyanilide and proceeding as in (1) a garnet-red dyeing is obtained; using the a -naphthalide or the 2-methoxyanilide instead of the 4<1>-methoxyanilide similar shades are obtained; (3) 4-phenoxyacetylamino-2.5-diethoxy - 1-aminobenzene, 2.3 - oxyanthracene carboxylic acid-2<1>-methylanilide and sodium nitrite are made into a paste and printed on the fabric as in (1), dried, passed through 10 per cent formic acid, then through sodium acetate solution and finally soaped (green); (4) a mixture of 4-(2<1>-methyl)-phenoxyacetylamino-2.5 - diethoxy - 1 - aminobenzene, 2.3 - oxynaphthoic acid-3<1>-chloranilide, sodium nitrite, sodium hydroxide, sodium acetate is made into a paste with turkey red oil, glycerine, starch tragacanth thickening and sodium m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, and the material is printed with this and dried; a vat-dye is then further printed on the material in combination with a reducing agent, the material steamed to fix the vat-dye and finally developed as in (1) (blue shades); (5) a material is printed with a colour prepared from b -naphthol, 4-amino-3.2<1>-dimethylazobenzene, sodium nitrite, sodium hydroxide, turkey red oil, glycerin, and starch-tragacanth, dried, passed through a bath of sulphuric acid containing Glauber's salt, then through a bath of sodium carbonate and finally soaped (bordeaux-red); (6) material is printed with a colour prepared from 4.4<1>-dichloro-2-amino-1.1<1>-diphenylether, 2.3-oxynaphthoic acid-2<1>-methoxyanilide, sodium nitrite, sodium hydroxide, sodium acetate, turkey red oil, glycerine, formaldehyde, and starch-tragacanth and then further treated as in (1) to give a red print; using 2-amino-4<1>-chloro-1.1<1>-diphenylether-4-carboxylic acid, and 2.3-oxynaphthoic acid - 2<1> - methoxyanilide and proceeding in the same way a red print is obtained. A table shows a number of prints and the shades produced on cotton, the following additional components being mentioned: Diazo-components: 2 - amino - 1 - methyl - 4 - nitrobenzene, 1 - amino - 2 - methoxy - 5 - chloro - 4 - benzoylaminobenzene, 1 - amino - 2 - methoxy - 5 - methyl - 4-benzoylaminobenzene, 1-amino-2.5-diethoxy-4-benzoylaminobenzene, p-chlorphenyl - azocresidine, o-anisolazo-a -naphthylamine, 1-amino-2-methyl-4-nitrobenzene, dianisidine, benzidine, p-phenylenediamine-azo-2-methoxy-5-methyl-1-aminobenzene, a -naphthylamine, 2-amino-5-acetylamino - 4.4<1> - dichlorodiphenylether, 2-amino - 4 - aceto - 4.4<1> - dichlordiphenylether, 2-amino-5-acetylamino-4.4<1>-dimethoxydiphenylether, aminoazobenzene, 1 - amino - 2.5-dimethoxy - 4 - benzoylaminobenzene, and 1-amino - 2 - chloro - 5 - methoxy - 4 - benzoylaminobenzene. Coupling components: di-(acetic acid) - o.o<1> - tolidide, 2.3 - oxynaphthoic acid-anilide, 2.3 - oxynaphthoic - 2<1> - methylanilide 3 - oxy - 1.2 - benzofluorenone, 2.3 - oxynaphthoic p - chloranilide, 2.3 - oxynaphthoic acid - 4<1> ethoxyanilide, 2.3-oxynaphthoic-1<1> - and -2<1>-naphthylamide, 2.3 - oxycarbazole - p - chloranilide, di-(4-methyl-1-oxy-2-benzoyl)-dianisidide, 2-oxyanthracene, 2.8-oxynaphthalene carboxylic acid anilide, 3.4-dimethyl-1-oxybenzene-6-carboxylic acid-2<1>-naphthylamide and 3-chloro-4-methyl-1-oxybenzene-6-carboxylic acid-2<1>-methyl=4<1>-chloranilide. Specification 262,537, [Class 15 (ii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes in the table referred to above as a further diazo component 2-amino-1.5-dimethyl - 4 - benzoylaminobenzene, but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
