Abstract

Azo dyes, forming upon the material; printing; stable diazo compounds.--Insoluble azo dyestuffs are produced on textile fibres by application to the fibres of a mixture containing a condensation product of a mono-, di- or trialkylolamine with a diazonium salt of an arylamine base free from sulphonic groups, a coupling component likewise free from sulphonic groups, and an alkali, followed by the subjection of the fibres to treatment with an acid, e.g. by an acid steaming operation or by passage through an acid liquor. For printing, the mixture is made into a paste with a thickening agent. The stable diazo compounds employed may be prepared by diazotizing the arylamine, neutralizing the solution, mixing with the alkylolamine and filtering off the product which separates out. In examples: (1) dianisidine is tetrazotized and condensed with triethanolamine, the product is mixed with starch tragacanth thickening, 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, caustic soda and turkey red oil, the mixture is printed on cotton and a navy blue print is developed by steaming in steam made acid with the vapour of acetic or formic acid or both; (2) a red print is similarly obtained by using the condensation product of diazotized 5-chloro-2-aminotoluene with diethanolamine as diazo component, and 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid anilide as coupling component.
