[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Seamed joints.-A container has a lapped or locked side seam and a curled top, the seam at the top of the curl being formed as a butt joint, and that at the lower portion of the curl as a lapped or locked seam. A can may be formed from a blank formed with cut away portions 3, 4, Fig. 1, one edge of the blank having a notch 1 and a tongue 2. The edge of the notch 1 is caused to abut against the edge of the recess 3 to form the joint at the top of the completed curl C, Fig. 3, the tongue 2 and the portion 4a forming overlapping joints on either side of the butt joint. The edges 5, 6 are seamed, all the joints being soldered. In a modification wherein the seamed joint 5, 6 extends to the curled top, tongues corresponding to the tongue 2 extend from both edges of the blank and are lock jointed. The side seam and that at the bottom of the curl may be lapped, a notch being cut in one blank only to form a butt joint at the top of the curl. In a further modification the tops of the edges may be cut away obliquely, the notch 1, Fig. 7, being cut obliquely to form a butt joint with the edge of the notch 3.
