Abstract
466,492. Seamed joints; soldered joints; cans &c. BARLOW, R., and BLAKEWAY, A. H. Nov. 25, 1935, No. 32682. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XVII] A can intended to have an internal coating of protective material applied in liquid state, has the body wall which carries the outer member of the side seam bent inwardly adjacent the side seam and longitudinally of the seam, and then bent gradually outwardly to merge into the peripheral line of the body, a gully being formed between the inwardly bent portion and the edge of the seam. A can having a soldered seamed joint 2, Fig. 4, a soldered lap joint 2a, Fig. 5, or a combined lap and lock seam, and which is adapted to be coated internally with a material such as wax, has an internal rib 13 formed in the body adjacent the outer member of the seam so that a gully 14 is formed in which the coating material 10 forms a layer of additional thickness. The metal of the body may be bent inwardly at 15 adjacent the seam as described in Specification 466,493, and the can may have ends formed as described in Specification 466,549, [Group XVII]. The coating material may comprise wax adapted to withstand refrigerating and pasteurizing temperatures, and may be applied by pouring molten wax into the can and draining off the excess. The edges of a blank to be seamed may be formed with slots or slits to improve the soldered joint as described in Specifications 465,836, 465,838, and 465,839.
