[Class 97 (ii)] A section of a road or the like is plotted by determining the distance from the surface of the road to the mean point of a number of points distributed over a length of the road as this length is displaced along the road. In the form shown in Fig. 2, an even number of rods a with rollers b at each end are connected twoby-two by larger rods c pivoted to the middle points of adjacent rods a. The rods c are similarly connected in pairs by rods d which are similarly connected in turn by a rod e so that the middle point m of the rod.e is substantially on a vertical line through, and at a uniform height above, the mean point R of the section of road surface between the outermost rollers b. The point m is connected by a parallelogram linkage p, Fig. 6, to a frame k supported by four wheels r. A roller n pivoted in the ends of arms s, which are pivoted at the other ends to the frame k, bears on the surface of the road vertically beneath the point m. A cable l fixed at one end to the spindle of the roller n passes over pulleys o<1>, o<2> to a counterweight q and carries a pen t in contact with a chart driven by chains v from the roller n. The pen t traces a vertical section of the road with reference to the locus of the mean point. The recording apparatus may be mounted on the bar e instead of on the frame k. In a modification, the oscillating rods may be replaced by an equivalent system of cables and pulleys.
