Abstract
339,884. Yates, H. H. April 18, 1929, [Convention date]. Coating yarns.-Apparatus for sizing yarn comprises a size box which can be raised and lowered independently of the remainder of the apparatus, an immersed roller under which the yarn passes, this roller being connected to an upper roller by an endless lattice, and a curved plate over which the yarn passes and against which it is pressed by a roller which reciprocates over the plate. The apparatus shown comprises a frame 5, 6, Fig. 1, in which is mounted the size box 7, wheels 8 on the latter engaging grooves in the frame members 5, and the box being raised or lowered by rack and pinion mechanism. The yarn is passed over drag-rods 11, and over a roller 12. A roller 13 is mounted above the size-box, and carried below this roller on arms 14 is a second roller 15. Running over the two rollers is an endless lattice 16 provided with cross rods 17. The yarn passes under the roller 15, and in case of breakage the broken strand adheres to the lattice and is carried up. Mounted on depending plates 17<a> secured to the cross members 6 is a curved plate 18 and, on each plate 17<a>, a curved guide rail 19. Beyond the plate 18 are squeezing rollers 20, the upper roller being easily detachable; above these rollers is a drying drum 21, from which the yarn passes to a drop roller 22 which moves freely in guides in the frame. The yarn finally passes between rollers 3. A shaft 24 mounted in the frame carries at each end an arm 25, at the upper end of which is mounted a rubber covered roller 26 which presses the yarn against the plate 18. The roller 26 is mounted at each end in a sleeve 27, Fig. 2, which slides over a downturned part of the arm 25. Mounted in the lower part of the sleeve is a sliding block 29 which carries a roller 30. The block 29 is held between springs, and the roller 30 engages the guide rail 19. At the upper end of the guide rail 19 is a guide 33, Fig. 4, having a spring 34 on its inside. Normally the roller 30 runs above the guide rail on the upward stroke of the arm 25, and the roller 26 is not pressed on to the plate 18. On reaching the end of the rail 19, the roller runs down the under side of the guide 33. The spring 34 closes the opening between the two guides, and the roller 30 is forced to travel under the rail 19 on the downward stroke of the arm 25, causing the roller 26 to be pressed on to the plate 18, so squeezing the yarn which passes over the plate. Suitable mechanism is provided for rocking the arm 25.
