[Class 140] [See also Group IX] A lap or fleece 4 of fibrous material such as cotton taken from the doffer 2 of a carding machine by a comb 3 is passed through an enclosed conduit formed by walls 17, 19 and simultaneously subjected to the action of a current of air to ensure a flow .of air therethrough. The conduit is formed above an orifice 8 in a floor 9 which supports the carding machine and below which the air is maintained at above atmospheric pressure. The air passing through the lap may be charged with powdered material from a hopper 21, or with a gas, vapour, or atomized liquid to modify the lap, e.g. by colouring, reinforcing, perfuming, disinfecting &c. Several such laps supplied through orifices in the floor 9 may be superimposed on a travelling conveyer 10 which may be vibrated to cause the laps to unite. The compound web may then be passed between guide rolls, impregnated, and dried as described in Specification 437,526. The walls of the orifice 8 are shaped as shown, and the conveyer 10 is enclosed, to prevent turbulence of the air currents.
