[Class 56] [See also Group XL] A metal vapour filled electric discharge tube adapted to emit ultra-violet light is composed of glass highly transparent to the light and flashed on the inside with a thin layer of glass less transparent but more resistant to the discharge and in particular with a higher softening temperature than the outer glass. The main envelope may have the following compositions : 74 per cent of SiO2, 15 per cent of B2O3' 7 per cent of Na2O, 4 per cent of Al2O3' or 75À5 per cent of SiO2, 13À5 per cent of B2O3, 9 per cent of Na2O and 2 per cent of Al2O3, whilst the flashed-on layer may consist of 58 per cent of SiO2, 1 per cent of B2O3, 28 per cent of Al2O3' 8 per cent of MgO, 5 per cent of CaO, or of 50 per cent of SiO2, 1 per cent of B2O3, 25 per cent of Al2Oa, 8 per cent of MgO, 6 per cent of CaO, 5 per cent of BaO and 5 per cent of P2O5.
