Abstract

Ethylene oxide is produced by catalytic oxidation of ethylene in presence of an inert gas and in the absence of water. The inert gas may be at least 50 per cent of the mixture. In an example, a mixture of ethylene, air, and carbon dioxide is passed over silver (which may be activated by gold or copper or both) at 300--400 DEG C., and the ethylene oxide may be recovered by adsorption in active carbon or solution in water. In another example the process is effected at pressures up to 50 atmospheres.
