Abstract
In the production of acetaldehyde from gases containing hydrogen and a small proportion of acetylene such as 5--20 per cent, the gases are treated with a sulphuric acid solution containing 0,3--3 grams of mercury per litre. In an example, the solution contains 100 grams of sulphuric acid and one gram of mercury in one litre of water at 95 DEG C., the gas being admitted through a fine-pored sinter-plate. To maintain the mercury concentration in the solution, 0,6--0,8 gram of mercury oxide is added per hour.
