Abstract
429,761. Conveying furnace charges. BRITISH DRIVER - HARRIS CO., Ltd., Albion Street, Manchester.-(Driver-Harris Co. ; Harrison, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Dec. 6, 1933, No. 34283. [Class 51 (ii)] In a furnace having a conveyer comprising a series of driven rollers 8 carrying charge-supporting discs 10, the rollers 8 terminate short of the side walls 2 of the furnace and are connected by flexible couplings 26 to shafts 28, 30 which extend through sealed apertures 32 in the walls 2 and are rigidly supported in bearings 40. The shafts 28 are rotated through bevel gearing 44 from a main driving shaft 42, and each of the shafts 28, 30 is cooled by water supplied through a valve-controlled branch 36 from a main 38. In the construction shown, the rollers 8 are supported along the centre line of the furnace by bearings each of which consists of a pair of rollers 12 mounted on a vertically adjustable pedestal 16, the adjustment being effected by rotating the shaft 48 to vary the position of a wedge shaped member 46. In the case of relatively narrow furnaces, these central bearings may be omitted.
