[Class 130] In an appliance for making cigarettes or tobacco cartridges, comprising an endless apron 12 supported by rollers 5, 7 rotatably mounted in a frame comprising a base 1 and end walls 2, 3, the roller 7 is rotatably mounted in levers 8 pivoted at 9 to the end walls near the side of the frame, so that pressure on the roller 7 during the cigarette-making operation tends to ensure that the roller shall not move away from the roller 5. As shown, the levers 8 are integral with a bar 10 which lies over the roller 5 in the cigarettemaking position and forms a guide for the cigarette paper 13. In this position, the spindles 6 of the roller 7 engage in recesses 11 in the end walls to limit the inward movement of the levers 8. The roller 5 may rotate in fixed bearing-holes in the end walls, or may be carried by levers such as 8, the two sets of levers being connected by gearing so that the rollers 5, 7 simultaneously approach or recede from the cigarette-making position. In a modification, the displaceable roller or rollers are mounted eccentrically in. cam plates or discs rotatable on the end walls of the frame. In a machine for making tobacco cartridges, the pivot 9 of the levers 8 lies below the plane of the spindles of the rollers 5, 7.
