[Class 130] In a continuous - rod machine comprising a rod former and a device for compressing a stream of tobacco T forwarded together with a wrapper web P, the former is movable to allow access for the removal of obstructions, &c., and to facilitate the threading of the wrapper web or replacement of the rod-forming tape 5. As shown in Fig. 1, the web P and tobacco T are carried by the tape 5 between side guides 12a and beneath a presser belt 12 and a tongue 13, which is part of the former, past a pasting device 14 to a sealing device such as a heated sealing belt 15. The compressor belt and the pasting and sealing devices are supported by the frame 17. The rod former comprises the tongue 13, a channelled bottom plate 19 a flat bar 20 supporting the upper run of the tape 5, and a carrier bar 21 supporting the bottom plate 19, the bar 20 and the tape roller 10. The tongue 13 is carried by an angular bar 18 removably mounted on the plate 19, which also supports guide members for turning over the margins of the wrapper web about the stream of tobacco. The bar 21 is pivotally mounted at 23 in a bearing block 22 on the frame 17, the bar being secured to a flattened face on the pivot pin 23, which turns freely in the block 22. Means for raising and lowering the bar 21 about the pivot 23 comprises a handle 28, Figs. 1 and 3, mounted on a pin 26 turning in a block 25 secured beneath the bar 21. A cam member 29 on the inner end of the pin 29 coacts with a screw 30 threaded into the frame 17, and terminates in a hook or slot for engagement with the screw 30 in the normal (raised) position of the bar 21. The bar may be retained in this position by tightening the screw 30. On turning the handle 28 clockwise, the cam 29 rides over the screw 30, allowing the bar 21 to come into the lowered position 21<1>,< >in which a stop 29a on the bar 29 engages the screw 30. In a modification, the tobacco is fed to the web P between inclined runs of the belt 12 and an underlying belt on which the tobacco is showered.
