Abstract

416,375. Vapour arc converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GALLIZIA, E., c/o General Electric Co., Witton, Birming- ham. Jan. 11, 1933, No. 954. [Class 39 (i).] The peripheral outline of the end surface of each anode is of such non- circular shape that the substitution of circular anodes for the non-circular anodes would result in an area of anode end surface which is substantially smaller. The anodes may have a rectangular, sectoral, trapezoidal, square or an oval crosssection and the surrounding shields may be similarly shaped. The shields may be formed by two concentric cylindrical walls, wherein the inner wall extends downwardly to a greater extent and the walls are connected, at intervals, by partitions. The anodes may be mounted on the cover plate, and, when separate shields are provided, they also are mounted on the plate, but are insulated therefrom in order that they may be given control potentials. The inner faces of the anodes are cooled by an extension of the cooling jacket 10, Fig. 2, of the condensing chamber, and oval or circular cooling pipes 11, connected between the jacket 10 and a container cooling jacket 13 are located between the anodes and adjacent the working faces thereof. Water passes from the jacket 10 through the pipes to the jacket 13. In a modification, a helical iron cooling pipe may be provided within the condensing chamber. With a rectangular anode, the grid 14 consists of rectangular strips arranged tangentially to concentric circles, the axes of which coincide with the axis of the container, or arranged parallel to a diameter of the container. With sector-shaped anodes, the grid consists of radial strips or of curved strips, the centres of which are on the axis of the container ; additional radial strips may be provided. The anode seals may be staggered and the anodes are arranged on concentric circles so as to extend between the same radial limits. In a further modification, the container is provided with anode arms of rectangular or oval cross-section, the anodes being similarly shaped.
