Abstract

412,502. Cigarette-maldng machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 22, 1933, No. 36102. [Class 130.] A cigarette-collecting mechanism for continuous-rod machines comprises means for forwarding a succession of cigarettes endwise and a suction device arranged adjacent to the path of the cigarettes and serving as a brake to stop forward movement of the cigarettes to permit transverse delivery. As shown, the cigarettes are delivered from the machine between forwarding belts 11, 12. Alongside the belts is a rotating collector drum 13 formed with axially extending grooves 13<a> provided with ports 15 communicating with a suction chamber S within the drum. The chamber S extends from a point adjacent to the belts 11, 12 to a point at which the cigarettes C are removed by delivery belts 16 running in grooves in the drum. The chamber S is formed in a stationary block 40 and communicates with a suction conduit 37 held by a spring 38 in substantially airtight relation to a flange 39 on the drum 13. The cigarettes are preferably moved positively into engagement with the grooves 13<a> of the drum by a pusher 14, which is given an orbital movement by means of crank pins 14<a> carried by discs on shafts 28, 29 driven through spiral gearing 26, 27 from a shaft 23, which also drives the shaft 17 of the drum 13 through gearing 18 ... 22 and the drive pulley of the belt 11 through spiral gears 30, 31. In a modification, suitable for the delivery of cork-tipped cigarettes or for use with very high speed machines, the pusher and the drum are long enough to transfer two cigarettes at a time to two aligned suction grooves on the drum, from which they are delivered to two sets of transverse delivery belts.
