[Class 130] Tobacco for cigarettes is subjected to a continuous feeding movement through a restricted curved passageway and repeated additional and more rapid feeding movements, in the direction of the continuous movement, are superimposed thereon to compact the tobacco. Tobacco removed from a carding roller 11 by a picker 25 is showered on to the upper part of a plate 30 by a fan 26 and slides down the plate to a feed roller 32 which forwards it into a passage P between a concave 34 and a roll 36 adapted to compact and feed forward the tobacco. The roll 36 is mounted on an eccentric portion 112 of a shaft 109 to produce an oscillating movement towards and away from the concave 34, the shaft 109 being rotated rapidly and the roll 36, which is independently driven, being mounted on the eccentric part 112 of the shaft 109 through a rubber annulus 128 which absorbs the eccentric movements between the roll and its driving gear 128. The compacted tobacco stream is directed around a more slowly moving roller 38 by a concave 40 before being showered on to the cigarette paper or a conveyer 44 by a picker 42. To prevent any tobacco being lost as it leaves the compacting roll 36, a guide or doctor blade 142 directs it into the concave 40, the blade being resiliently mounted to allow for the eccentric movement of the roll 36. The roll itself is provided with a flange 119, Fig. 5, concentric with the eccentric shaft 112 and a rubber buffer between the flange 119 and a flange 124 connected to the non-eccentric part 113 of the shaft 109 transmits the drive to the roller.
