Abstract
Alloys of the alkaline earth metals, including magnesium and beryllium, with metals that do not readily alloy with aluminium, such as lead, are made by mixing together the metal such as lead and an aluminium alloy containing the alkaline earth metal, and afterwards separating the resulting layers of aluminium and the alloy of the alkaline earth metal and the metal to be alloyed therewith. Pieces or lumps or grains of an alkaline earth metal compound may be added to a bath of aluminium, and after the reduction of the compound, molten lead is added to the bath; alternatively the compound may be added to a bath comprising aluminium and lead. Alloys of beryllium may be prepared from beryl by first making an aluminium-beryllium-silicon alloy from the mineral and adding the complementary metal e.g. cadmium. The pure alkaline earth metals may be extracted from the alloys, for example, by volatilizing off the complementary metals. Specification 397,844 is referred to.
