Abstract
Acid-resistant silicon iron castings are produced by melting pig iron in a shaft furnace &c., adding silicon or ferro-silicon to the molten mass, removing the graphite which separates from the molten mass, adding, in the solid form, low-carbon iron, low carbon ferro-silicon of low silicon percentage or a mixture of low-carbon iron with silicon or ferro-silicon and finally casting the finished alloy in moulds. Only sufficient silicon or ferro-silicon may be added initially to cause the separation of the graphite, the rest being added after the graphite is removed. The silicon or ferro-silicon may be added to the molten pig iron outside the furnace &c. in which the latter is melted. Other metals such as nickel or copper up to 3 per cent may be included in the alloys. The upper limit of the silicon content is 25 to 30 per cent.
