Abstract
A process for the manufacture of Fe-Si-Mg alloys, e.g. for use in inoculation of cast iron to get spheroidal graphite, comprises forming a magnesium melt at 650 DEG C., covering the melt with flowers of sulphur or other known slag for magnesium, and adding solid Fe-Si containing at least 70% Si while increasing the temperature of the melt to 1070-1100 DEG C., any further alloying additions, e.g. Cu, Ni, Fe-Si low in Si, Ca, Mn or Lanthanides, being made to the resultant alloy heated to a temperature of 1150-1200 DEG C. Calcium silicon may be added with the Fe-Si in the first stage which is preferably carried out in harmony with, and more preferably up to 50 DEG C. above, the known liquidus curves of the Si-Mg diagram (see the Figure, not shown). The alloy may consist of 10-40% magnesium, 30-60% silicon, 10-25% calcium, 10-30% iron, and copper, nickel and manganese as further optional alloying constituents. The primary melting is preferably carried out in a graphite rod furnace or a mains-frequency induction crucible furnace.
