Abstract
An alloy steel containing from 0,2 to 1,5 per cent of molybdenum, 0,15 to 2 per cent of carbon, 0,3 to 3 per cent of manganese, 91 to 99,2 per cent of iron and, if desired, 0,15 to 2,5 per cent of aluminium is produced in which after the molten constituents have been substantially deoxidized in the usual way and the heat killed, a predetermined amount of an agent, e.g. aluminium or vanadium, is added to produce cementitic dispersion and fine grain size, e.g. of from No. 5 to No. 8 of the A.S.T.M., in the steel. From 0,032 to 0,8 per cent of p chromium may be included, the iron content being correspondingly reduced. Where the steel is made by the open hearth process, and where ferro-silicon is used as the deoxidant, about one-third of the ferro-silicon is added to the molten metal followed by about 1,25 pounds of aluminium per ton of steel, and the remainder of the ferro-silicon. If the steel is produced in an electric furnace, the oxidation is effected by the addition of ferro-manganese followed by ferro-silicon and from 1 to 1,25 pounds of aluminium per ton of steel. The aluminium is added when the temperature of the bath is about 2800 DEG F. Specific analyses of steel are given.
