Abstract

241,224. Meyer, M., and Meyer L., (trading as H³ttenwerke Tempelhof A. Meyer). Oct. 11, 1924, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Alloys; liquating.-A process for separating the constituents of tin-lead alloys containing also antimony or copper or both, or for obtaining from them other alloys of different composition, consists in melting the whole of the alloy or alloys and allowing the products to cool slowly so that certain constituents solidify while the remaining fluid metal or alloy may be drawn off. A eutectic alloy consisting of 55 per cent of tin, 41.4 per cent of lead, 0.1 per cent of copper, and 3.5 per cent of antimony may be obtained from a charge consisting of 44 per cent of tin, 32 per cent of lead, 4 per cent of copper, and 20 per cent of antimony, or from a charge consisting of 70 per cent of tin. 13 per cent of lead, 5 per cent of copper, and 12 per cent of antimony, the solid residue in the latter case being a bearing metal consisting of 76 per cent of tin, 16 per cent of antimony, 7 per cent of copper, and 1 per cent of lead. The process may be carried out in furnaces of such depth that the material cools sufficiently slowly to allow separation of the solidified and molten constituents.
