[Class 99 (i).] A butt j joint i; sealed by a pair of interengaging rings 5, 6 having coacting tapered surfaces and en closed in a recess 7 formed between the flanges 1, 2. The outer ring 5 is of softer metal or material than the innei ring 6. The flanges are in contact when the joint is tightened and the ring 5 is not compressed axially. The ring 6 fits partially into the ring 5 before compression.
