Abstract
376,459. Roller and roller-and-breast mills. COX, H. E., 131, City Road, Bristol, TORRANCE, J. R., The Priory, Weston Road, Bath, and TORRANCE & SONS, Ltd., Bitton Foundry, Bristol. June 12, 1931, No. 17145. [Class 59.] A feed hopper of a roller or a roller-andbreast mill for grinding and/or refining paints or fluids or mixtures which become fluid after grinding has a tapered or reduced throat 105, 120<1>, leading to the grinding nip of the mill so that a throat feed pressure is set up such that the coarser colour is passed gradually through with the finer colour and reduced. As shown in Fig. 3, the hopper 104 supplying the material to rolls 101, 102 having different peripheral speeds is provided with a sloping bottom 103 which terminates in a partition 106 sloping towards the nip of the rolls to form the feed throat 105. In Fig. 5, as applied to a mill having a roller 121 and breast bar 122, the base 120 of the hopper overhangs the roll at an acute angle and forms a contracted feed throat 120<1>. In the modification, Fig. 3, movable side plates may be attached to the sides of the hopper and the sides may slant towards one another.
