Abstract
364,124. Lubricating axle bearings. PICKERSGILL, W. R. A., 2, Villa Road, Brixton Road, London. Oct. 1, 1930, No. 29428. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii).] Oil is raised from the bottom of a railway vehicle axle-box to passages 12 above the bearing by an impeller 9 journalled on a pin 8 secured to the cover 7, the impeller being caused to rotate with the axle 3 by means of a pin 10a projecting into a slot 9e in the impeller from a plate 10 secured to the end of the axle. The impeller is provided with two or more shoes 9a, each of which has inclined portions 9c connected by an arcuate portion 9b.which is concentric with and closely adjacent to the inner periphery of a cylindrical chamber 5 closed by or formed in the cover 7. The latter has a filling aperture 17a with a spring closure 7b, an internal guard member 7c being adapted to prevent abstraction of oil from the box. The passages 12 communicate by inclined passages 12a with troughs 2b in the brass 2a, from which the oil overflows or is led through holes 2c to the bearing surface. A small proportion of the oil is diverted from the passages 12 into inclined conduits 13 containing absorbent material and leading to the horn-block guides.
