[Class 103 (v).] In an automatic knuckle coupling for railway vehicles of the kind in which the knuckle B is opened by a pivoted knuckle thrower E actuated by the lock D, the lock, when in its lowermost or locking position, Fig. 1, is adapted to be supported in part upon surfaces 20a, 20b of the tail 20, Fig. 4, of the knuckle by means of an upper laterally projecting lug 21 and a lower shoulder 21a disposed respectively above and below the locking face 41. In addition, the lock is supported at its rear upon the knuckle-thrower E as shown, the latter point of support being to the rear of the centre of gravity of the lock, while the first-mentioned points of support are forward thereof, this arrangement permitting the depending leg 3 of the lock to be retained out of contact with the walls of the coupler head A. The co-operating surfaces 21a, 20b slope rearwardly and thus prevent the forward upper corner of the lock from jamming against the forward wall of the cavity in which the lock operates.
