Abstract

340,666. Coating cakes with icing. WILLAN, H., 15, St. Georges Road, Beckenham, Kent. Oct. 22, 1929, No. 32025. [Class 28 (i).] Apparatus for applying icing and piping to the sides of cakes, and for making " saucer " tops and bottoms on cardboard or gum-paste discs, comprises a base plate having slots along which the standards A, B, Fig. 1, are adjustable and are clamped by screws A<1>, B<1>, and other slots along which uprights J, L, Fig. 12, are similarly adjustable, these uprights serving to support members for applying and shaping the icing. The standard A carries a revoluble disc C having a centre spike C<1> and other spikes F screwed through the disc, the spikes serving to hold the cake, in co-operation with similar spikes D<2>,F on a disc D journalled in the standard B. The disc C and the cake are turned by the handle A4. To effect angular measurements on the cake, a strip is inserted in a slot E<2> in a stationary bush E, the strip having an opening through which readings on the scale E<2> can be observed. The disc C may be locked in the desired position by a screw A3. The disc D is journalled in the upper part of the standard B which is pivoted at B<5> to the lower part. A quadrant B4 having holes B<7> is screwed to the upper part, so that by means of a pin inserted in the hole B<6>, the cake may be held by the disc D alone, in an inclined or horizontal position. The uprights J, L, Fig. 12, have a series of holes J3, L<3> which serve to support a member M having extensions M<1> which are inserted in the holes. Members K<2> are adjustable along the member M to correspond with the size of the cake (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 12), the members M, K<2> having ledges which support a die M<3> which shapes the icing applied to the side of the cake. For piping the sides of cakes, a graduated bridge member is supported by the uprights J, L at the same level as the top of the cake. The icing bag is positioned 'by a member slidably adjustable on the graduated bridge. As shown in Fig. 8, a cardboard or like disc K<6> is secured on the disc C, the centre spike C<1> passing through the disc K<6> and a screw C<5> entering another hole. The disc K<6> is kept. against the disc C by a tube K' having a flared end which is passed over the spike C<1> and is carried by a bar K supported by the standard J. The die K<5> is supported by a ledge K<1> on the bar K and by ledges K<4> on slidably adjustable members K<2>.
