Grates.-A travelling grate comprises a number of endless chain units mounted at each end of the grate on coaxial sprocket wheels and arranged side by side so as to occupy the entire width of the grate. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the driving links 4 and ordinary carrier links 6 of each unit 2 are connected by transverse pivot pins 3 on the ends of which are provided sleeves 15 for carrying tumbler links 5. The holes in the tumbler links are rather larger than the sleeves 15 and have rounded edges. The tumbler links are of angle section and extend above the ends of the pivot pins 3. They are capable of a limited tilting movement, so that during expansion and contraction of the grate the space between the grate units remains closed. Guide bars 18 may engage with the tumbler links. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the tumbler links 5 and driving links 4 are provided with projections and recesses 20. 21 engaging with one another. Heel pieces 23 on the tumbler links engage with a rib 24 on the guide bar 25.
