Abstract

333,396. Mackie & Sons, Ltd., J., and Mackie, J. P. Aug. 12, 1929. Coilers.--In a mechanism for filling cans 2, 3, Figs. 1 and 2, with sliver and for automatically removing the filled cans from the filling position and substituting empty cans therefor, the platform 4 which carries the cans is reciprocated alternatively along a number of tracks and is automatically transferred from one track to another. The platform 4 is reciprocated by a form of mangle-pinion mechanism comprising a vertical shaft 5 and a pinion 7 adapted to engage a rack 8 when the can 2 is being filled and a rack 9 when the can 3 is in the filling position. The pinion 7 is automatically transferred from the rack 8 to the rack 9 when the can 2 is full by inserting a third rack 38 in the gap between the racks 8, 9 to form a composite rack 8-38-9. A cam disc 22, notched at 39, is driven from the platform 4 through the levers 14, 15 pawl-and-ratchet 17, 18 and gear-wheels 19, 20. A lever 24 having a tooth 40 is pivoted at 23 above the disc 22 and is connected by a rod 26 to a crank 27 fixed on a shaft 28 which carries a second crank 31 the pin 32 of which engages a slotted arm 33 which forms one arm of a three armed member 33, 35, 38 the second and third arms respectively comprising the curved ends 36, 37 of the racks 8, 9 and the rack 38. The wheels 19, 20 are chosen so that when the can 2 is full the tooth 40 enters the notch 39, the, shaft 28 is thereby rotated and the crank 31 moved to the dotted position, Fig. 3, the ends 36, 37 being removed and the rack 38 inserted between the racks 8, 9. The pinion 7 then moves the platform 4 a sufficient distance to allow it to engage the rack 9 while the disc 22 will have rotated sufficiently to disengage the tooth 40 from the notch 39 lifting the lever 24 and thereby returning the rack 38 to its inoperative position and moving the ends 36, 37 back to close the racks 8, 9. The can 3 is then reciprocated over the range of the filling position. Single-sided racks with a reversing gear may be used instead of the double sided racks described while the platform 4 may carry more than two cans a corresponding number of racks being provided.
