Abstract
525,283. Coiling slivers. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. Feb. 16, 1939, Nos. 5212 and 32899. [Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii)] In a carding machine, Good's machine, spreader or drawing frame for bast or long leaf fibres having automatically operated means for switching the delivery of the sliver over from a full can to an empty can without moving the cans, the cans and switching means are arranged so that the sliver is always delivered in the same fore and aft direction; the sliver may be delivered into piles on turntables instead of into cans. As shown, the sliver S is being delivered by the rollers 16, which are chain driven from the rollers 14 of the carding engine, into the can 10 and when that can is full a pivoted conductor 20 is actuated to swing forward and deliver the sliver in the same direction as it is fed over the can 11. The conductor 204 is connected by a rod 48 with a crank 46 on a worm wheel 32 driven from a bevel wheel 28 and having a pair of gaps 33, the worm 30 being in one of the gaps while a can is being filled. A catch plate 34 having two abutments 35 is fixed to the worm wheel and the lower abutment is engaged by a pawl 42 to prevent a weight 38, pivoted on the frame and engaging one of two pins 36 on the wheel 32, from rotating the wheel into driving engagement with the worm 30. When the can 10 is nearly full a pin 26, projecting from a wheel 22 of the usual bell motion, engages the tail of the pawl 42 and disengages the pawl from the abutment 35. The worm wheel 32 is then turned by the weight 38 until the other abutment 35 engages a second pawl 44; the pin 26 then releases the pawl 42 and engages the pawl 44 which is disengaged from the abutment 35 to allow the weight 38 to turn the wheel 32 into engagement with the worm 30, the wheel being driven until the worm 30 comes into the second gap 33 when the abutment 35 is again engaged by the weighted pawl 42. The worm wheel 32 is rotated through 180 degrees and the conductor is swung to the dotted position to deliver the sliver into the can 11 until the wheel 22 has completed another revolution, when the pawls 42, 44 are again actuated to cause the worm wheel to rotate through another 180 degrees and switch the conductor back to its original position over a fresh empty can. The length of sliver 50 extending from the top of the filled can to the bottom of the can which is being filled is engaged by a hook 60, carried by an endless chain 56 driven by one of the turntables 52 carrying the cans, and as the hook 60 descends it draws the sliver down between the cans in a loop and passes between jaws 66 carried by rods 62 on pivots 64; the hook engages. the rods 62 below the pivots and causes the jaws to grip the sliver and as the hook continues to descend it severs the loop of sliver. The jaws are opened by weights 68 as the hook rises and allows the hook to pass between them. The turntables can be oscillated or rotated continuously and the sliver can be piled thereon against semi-circular guards; the conductor may be arranged to slide to transfer the delivery from one can to the other. The conductor may be connected to a crank disc which is turned through successive angles of 180 degrees by,means driven from the carding engine and comprises a weight which is gradually lifted and suddenly released, a oneway connection, e.g., a ratchet and pawl, being provided between the weight and the crank; a spring could be used instead of a weight. The slivers may be packed by devices of the kind described in Specifications 323,596, ' [Class 120 (iii)], 412,893 and 422,715.
