287,745. Krupp Grusonwerk Akt.-Ges., F. May 24, 1927. Addition to 252,679. Roasting.-In a process of treating ores containing volatizable metals as claimed in the parent Specification, material such as lime, limestone, sand or saltpetre for stiffening the charge or for its further treatment is introduced into the reaction zone of the furnace. The addition of stiffening material allows the temperature of the reaction zone to be increased without causing fusion of the charge. The temperature can, however, be reduced by moistening the additions or by the decomposition of suitable additions. Fine ores which would tend to be carried away by the gases if introduced with the charge may also be introduced into the reaction zone, being preferably blown in with additional fuel. The coarser oxides obtained by the process may also be added for their further treatment.
