Abstract
1,247,417. Blast furnace reduction of iron ore. ARMCO STEEL CORP. May 22, 1969, No. 26273/69. Heading C7D. In the blast furnace reduction of iron ores (e.g. taconites) to form molten iron the top gases are cooled, cleaned to remove dust, a portion thereof is enriched with a fluid hydrocarbon fuel (e. g. CH 4 ), heated to react the fuel with CO 2 and water present therein to give a mixture of CO and H 2 and the treated gas at 1400-2000‹ F. is then fed into the reduction zone of the furnace stack where the temperature is 1400-2000‹ F. Part of the cooled top gases may be used as fuel in heating the enriched gas (e.g. in pebble stoves in which the pebbles have preferably been soaked in nickel sulphate solution to provide a catalyst) and/or in the blast furnace stoves; and part thereof may be used to control the temperature of the treated gas (preferably after being mixed with fuel as above).
