Abstract
1401718 Treatment of nickeliferous oxide ores INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 9 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 6402/73 Heading C7D Nickeliferous oxide materials (e.g. nickeliferous lateritic ores and roasted nickeliferous sulphidic ores) are pre-heated to a temperature above 850C and mixed with at least one chloride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or iron and maintained at a temperature between 900C and 1100C by direct heating in an atmosphere reducing to nickel chloride but non-reducing to ferrous chloride (e.g. a hydrogen containing atmosphere having a reducing potential equivalent to a CO:CO 2 volume ratio between 1:2 and 4:1) to produce metallized particles containing most of the nickel and of any cobalt present which are then recovered. Particulate carbonaceous material may be added to the pre-heated material which may be partially reduced as a result of the pre-heating process. The chloride and/or carbonaceous material added may be in the dehydrated form and the mixture of oxidic material, chloride and carbonaceous material may be directly heated to 900-1100C by combustion of fuel and pre-heated free oxygen containing gas or oxygen enriched air. The process may be carried out in a multi hearth furnace or by pre-heating nickeliferous oxidic material using burner 24 in rotary furnace A mixing with controlled amounts of chloride and carbonaceous material in housing C and heating the mixture in rotary furnace B at a reducing temperature by combustion of fuel and free oxygen containing gas flowing co-currently from burner 29. The reduced solid material and gases may be removed by valve 32 and flue damper 31 respectively and the solid material may be cooled under non-oxidizing conditions and the nickel values separated therefrom by magnetic separation or by flotation. The gases may be cleaned in a wet scrubber the solution of which is neutralized with a base (e.g. limestone) or high iron ore or reduced nickeliferous oxidic material and the chlorides so produced recycled.
