Abstract

A method of producing lead from sulphide ores such as galena or sulphidic lead concentrates is characterized by the use of waste aluminium or waste aluminium alloys as the reducing agent. These waste metals are those which, in consequence of surface contamination, are incapable of use for their original purpose or for other purposes. The reaction may be carried out in hearth furnaces or short drum furnaces, lined with bricks or tamped masses of dolomite or magnesite, and preferably in the absence of air or in an inert gas atmosphere. Flue dust arising from the process may be recycled or subjected to separate treatment. The reduction preferably takes place at temperatures at which negligable evaporation of lead takes place and at which the aluminium sulphide slag can be easily separated from the metallic lead produced. The lead may be continuously drawn off and the slag continuously or intermittently. In the latter case the temperature may be raised to about 1200 DEG C-1300 DEG C for a short time by charging relatively large quantities of reactants to ensure tapping a fluid slag. Specifications 10303/06, [Class 82], and 669,272 are referred to.
