Laying ropes and cables on or off during winding.-In coiling gear for windlasses of the kind in which the winding drum is reciprocated during the winding of the cable in accordance with the laying of the cable on the drum, the drum is reciprocated by cam mechanism. The drum a is slidably mounted on its driving shaft b and is provided with a loose collar k which is connected by a rod h and pin g to a cylindrical cam c loosely mounted on the shaft b. The rod h is slidably mounted in bearings i, j, and the cam c is driven through worm gearing by the shaft f.
