Abstract
119,314. Macfarlane, G. T. Oct. 27, 1917 Driving-gear for winding and paying - out apparatus. - In ships' winches driven through epicyclic gearing as described in Specification 17680/15, the planet pinions of the gearing are held frictionally against rotation when overhauling. The planet pinions 6 gear with teeth c carried by a brake drum 31 fixed to the barrel 1, and with a sun wheel b keyed to the shaft a on which the barrel 1 is freely mounted. Each pinion 6 is fixed on one end of a spindle 7 mounted in a brake drum 8, and the other end of each spindle is fitted with a drum 9 around which passes a brake band 10. The ends of each brake band 10 are attached to a bell crank lever 13, Fig. 2. provided with an arm 14 which ends in a block 15 formed with an inclined groove 16. A pin or roller 17 carried by a bar 18 projecting laterally from the sliding collar 11 applies or releases the brakes as the collar is moved. The collar is grooved! to receive the forked end of a rocking lever, the other end of which engages a cam grove formed in a boss on a shaft rotated by a hand-lever. A ring 30 may make an oil-tight joint between the drums 8, 31 to allow the gearsto run in an oil bath.
